D.M.D., M.S.D. — Periodontist & Practice Owner, Troy PeriodonticsDr. Mahogany Miles has called the Capital District home for the past 10 years. She grew up in East Chicago, Indiana — a steel mill town on the shores of Lake Michigan — and that background shaped a work ethic and sense of purpose that runs through everything she does.
Her academic path was distinguished from the start. At Butler University in Indianapolis, Dr. Miles was a Dr. John Morton-Finney merit scholar, majoring in biology while minoring in chemistry and Spanish. She then enrolled at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine as a Martin Luther King Jr. fellow and Dean's List scholar, graduating in the top 10 of her class with magna cum laude honors. She went directly to the Indiana University School of Dentistry to complete both her certificate and master's degree in periodontics with a minor in oral pathology.
After a year in practice on Long Island, Dr. Miles relocated to the Capital District and earned her diplomate status and board certification from the American Board of Periodontology. In 2016, she became president of the Third District Dental Society and the proud owner of Troy Periodontics — the esteemed 40-year practice of Dr. John Keegan and the late Dr. Peter Collins.
The practice was located at 2119 Burdett Avenue for decades before Dr. Miles relocated it to the Medical Plaza building in downtown Troy in September 2025. She also enjoys presenting on periodontology to her dental colleagues in the Third and Fourth Districts of the NY Dental Societies.
A 40-Year Practice, Reimagined for Today
Troy Periodontics has served the Capital District for more than 40 years. Founded by Dr. John Keegan and the late Dr. Peter Collins, the practice built a reputation for excellence in periodontal care over decades of service to the Troy community.
When Dr. Mahogany Miles took ownership in 2016, she preserved everything that made the practice trusted and added the rigorous academic specialty training and board certification she brings as a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
In September 2025, the practice moved to a modern clinical space at the Medical Plaza building in downtown Troy — Suite 300 at 500 Federal Street — bringing the same quality of care into a facility designed to match it.
Today Troy Periodontics offers a comprehensive range of non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatments, dental implants, sedation dentistry, and preventive care — all under one roof, with a specialist who has trained specifically in every procedure she performs.

Board-certified periodontist Dr. Mahogany Miles becomes practice owner and president of the Third District Dental Society in the same year.

Research shows that Black adults are more likely to develop periodontal disease and oral cancers, often facing barriers to early diagnosis and treatment due to systemic healthcare inequalities. Implicit bias in the dental field has also influenced the quality of care Black patients receive.

Dr. Miles is an active member of the Delta Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. — the first Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women.
