Sedation Dentistry
in Troy, NY
Dental anxiety should never stand between you and a healthy smile. Dr. Mahogany Miles offers safe, effective sedation so you can get the periodontal care you need — comfortably and without fear.
What Is Sedation Dentistry — and Who Is It For?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is not general anesthesia — you remain conscious but in a calm, comfortable state throughout treatment.
Dental anxiety is more common than most people realize. Studies estimate that between 9 and 20 percent of Americans avoid the dentist due to fear, and the consequences of postponing necessary care compound over time. Gum disease that goes untreated progresses. Teeth that could have been saved are lost. Sedation removes that barrier.
At Troy Periodontics, Dr. Mahogany Miles offers sedation for scaling and root planing, osseous surgery, gum grafting, and other periodontal procedures. If fear or sensitivity has been keeping you from treatment, sedation may be exactly the solution you need.
Dr. Miles discusses your anxiety level, medical history, and the procedure planned before recommending a sedation approach. Your safety and comfort are monitored throughout every appointment.
Sedation May Be Right for You If You:
- Experience significant dental anxiety or fear
- Have had a traumatic dental experience in the past
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Have difficulty keeping your mouth open for long periods
- Have very sensitive teeth or gums
- Need a longer or more complex procedure
- Have TMJ disorder or jaw discomfort
- Simply want a more relaxed experience
What to Expect Before, During, and After
Sedation dentistry at Troy Periodontics is a straightforward, well-managed process. Dr. Miles and her team will walk you through every step so you arrive prepared and confident.
Your comfort and safety are monitored throughout your appointment. Vital signs are tracked and our team is trained to ensure sedation is working appropriately before any procedure begins.
Dr. Miles reviews your health history, anxiety level, and planned procedure to select the most appropriate sedation option for you.
For oral sedation, you will receive clear instructions on medication timing, fasting, and arranging a driver. For nitrous oxide, no special preparation is required.
Nitrous oxide is delivered through a small mask placed over your nose. Oral sedation medication is taken approximately one hour before the procedure begins.
While relaxed, Dr. Miles completes your procedure. Most patients have little or no memory of the treatment itself, which is entirely normal.
Nitrous oxide clears quickly and most patients can drive themselves home. Oral sedation requires a responsible adult to drive you and remain with you for the rest of the day.
Why Patients Choose Sedation at Troy Periodontics
Sedation makes it possible to complete necessary care you may have been postponing. Here is what it changes for patients.
Deep Calm During Treatment
Whether you choose nitrous oxide or oral sedation, the result is a significantly more relaxed state during your procedure. Many patients are surprised at how manageable treatment feels with the right level of sedation support.
More Accomplished in Fewer Visits
When you are relaxed, Dr. Miles can work more efficiently. Longer procedures that might otherwise require multiple appointments can often be consolidated into one visit, saving you time and reducing the number of times you need to come in.
Safe and Closely Monitored
Both sedation options offered at Troy Periodontics have excellent safety profiles when administered by a trained professional. Your vital signs are monitored throughout and Dr. Miles adjusts the approach based on your individual needs.
Finally Address Delayed Care
Gum disease and other periodontal conditions do not resolve on their own — and delay makes them more complex to treat. Sedation removes the anxiety barrier so you can get the care you need now, before the problem becomes more serious.
Sedation Methods Available at Troy Periodontics
Dr. Miles will recommend the most appropriate option based on your anxiety level, the procedure planned, and your medical history.
A mild, inhaled sedative delivered through a small mask placed over the nose. Nitrous oxide produces a calm, slightly euphoric sensation within minutes. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, and most patients can drive themselves home afterward. It is appropriate for mild to moderate anxiety and can be used for adults and children alike.
A prescription medication taken approximately one hour before your appointment. Oral sedation produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide — ranging from minimal to moderate depending on the dosage. Many patients have little to no memory of the procedure. Because the effects last several hours, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.
All procedures at Troy Periodontics include local anesthesia as a baseline. This numbs the specific area being treated so you feel no sharp sensations during the procedure. Local anesthesia is often used alone for patients without significant anxiety, or in combination with nitrous oxide or oral sedation for those who benefit from both physical and psychological comfort.
Beyond medication, Dr. Miles and her team take an active approach to patient comfort. We encourage you to ask questions, communicate during the procedure, and take breaks when needed. If a particular concern is keeping you from seeking care, tell us — we have likely heard it before and can help you work through it.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Most patients with the following characteristics are good candidates for sedation. Dr. Miles will review your health history before making a recommendation to ensure the approach is safe and appropriate for you.
- Moderate to severe dental anxiety or phobia
- History of traumatic dental experiences
- Low pain tolerance or very sensitive teeth
- Strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment
- Difficulty sitting still or keeping the mouth open
- Complex periodontal procedures requiring extended chair time
- Multiple procedures being completed in a single appointment
- Patients who have postponed necessary care due to fear
Who May Not Be Eligible
Sedation is not appropriate for everyone. Certain medical conditions, medications, or allergies may affect eligibility. It is important to disclose your full health history and medication list at your consultation.
Oral sedation is generally not recommended during pregnancy. Patients with certain respiratory conditions, severe obstructive sleep apnea, or specific drug interactions may require an alternative approach. Dr. Miles will review all of this with you during your consultation and will only proceed when it is clinically safe to do so.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs
Straight answers to the questions patients ask most about sedation options at Troy Periodontics.
Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have strong safety records when administered by a trained professional to appropriately screened patients. Dr. Miles reviews your full health history before recommending any sedation approach and monitors your vital signs throughout the procedure. The doses used in dental sedation are carefully calibrated to produce a calm, relaxed state — not deep unconsciousness — which gives an additional margin of safety.
No. Dental sedation as offered at Troy Periodontics produces a state of conscious sedation — you remain awake and can respond to questions or instructions, but you are deeply relaxed and may feel drowsy. Many patients with oral sedation have little memory of the procedure afterward, which most find reassuring. General anesthesia, which renders patients fully unconscious, is not offered at this practice.
For nitrous oxide, yes — the gas clears your system within minutes of removing the mask, and most patients feel normal shortly afterward. For oral sedation, you must not drive for the remainder of the day. You will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you at home until the sedative effects have fully worn off, which typically takes several hours.
The cost depends on the type of sedation and the procedure being performed. Nitrous oxide is generally less expensive than oral sedation. During your consultation, Dr. Miles will provide a transparent, itemized estimate so you know exactly what to expect. We offer Cherry Financing with 0% interest for up to 24 months and CareCredit to make the cost manageable. Contact us at 518-274-5015 for a specific estimate based on your planned treatment.
Most dental insurance plans do not cover sedation as a standalone benefit, as it is often classified as elective. However, coverage policies vary significantly by plan and employer. It is worth checking with your insurance provider, and our team can assist you in understanding your benefits before treatment. Financing options are available for out-of-pocket costs.
Nitrous oxide has a long, well-established safety record in pediatric dentistry and is commonly used for children who experience anxiety or difficulty sitting still for procedures. Oral sedation for children requires additional screening and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Dr. Miles will discuss whether sedation is appropriate for a younger patient during the consultation, taking into account the child's age, weight, and the nature of the procedure.
Individual responses to sedation medications can vary based on body weight, metabolism, anxiety level, and other factors. If a previous sedation experience was inadequate, that is valuable information for Dr. Miles to have. She will factor in what you experienced before when planning your sedation approach and may adjust the method or dosage accordingly. Please bring this up during your consultation so it can be addressed proactively.
