Information You Can Act On

Most dental information online is written to rank rather than to help. These guides are written the other way round: they answer the specific question, including the parts that are inconvenient to say.

That means telling you when a symptom can reasonably be watched and when it cannot, explaining why a treatment that sounds identical can cost very different amounts, and being clear about what is not known without an examination. Where the honest answer is "this depends on findings we would need to measure", the guide says so rather than inventing a number.

Each guide is written from the perspective of a periodontal specialist, which changes what can be said. A periodontist can explain how bleeding is actually measured and staged, why bone loss shows on a radiograph and not in the mirror, and which parts of an implant fee are separate line items. That detail is what is usually missing from general dental content.

None of this replaces being examined. Use it to arrive at your appointment knowing what to ask.

What You Will Find Here

  • What specific symptoms usually mean
  • When something can wait and when it cannot
  • What a procedure actually involves, step by step
  • What drives the cost of treatment
  • Questions worth asking before you commit
  • How insurance tends to apply, and where it falls short
  • What a first appointment involves
  • Plain language, no sales copy

Looking for a Specific Treatment?

These guides explain symptoms and decisions. If you already know what you need, or want to read about a particular procedure, the treatment pages cover each service in full: what it involves, who it suits, how long it takes, and what recovery looks like.

Both lead to the same place. A periodontal evaluation measures pocket depths, records bleeding points and assesses bone level on radiographs, and the findings determine what is appropriate. Reading beforehand does not change the findings, but it does tend to make the conversation about them a great deal more useful.

About These Guides

How to use this information, and what it can and cannot tell you.

No, and they are written to be clear about where that line falls. A guide can explain what a symptom usually indicates, what the possible causes are, and what would need to be measured to tell them apart. It cannot tell you which applies to you, because that requires pocket depth measurements around each tooth, radiographs showing bone level, and a review of your medical history. The purpose is to help you recognise when something needs looking at and to arrive knowing what to ask.

Start with the one that matches the symptom or decision in front of you. If something in your mouth is bleeding, changing, or uncomfortable, read the symptom guide first, because the useful question at that point is whether it needs attention and how soon. If you already know treatment is coming and you are weighing options or quotes, the cost guide is more relevant. If you are not sure which situation you are in, the services page explains what each treatment addresses.

These guides reflect the clinical approach of Dr. Mahogany Miles, a board-certified periodontist with three years of specialty training beyond dental school in the gums, bone and supporting structures of the teeth, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. They are written for patients in and around Troy, New York, which is why they reference how care works here rather than describing dentistry in the abstract.

Still Have
a Question?

If what you are looking for is not here, call the office and ask. A question worth asking usually becomes the next guide.
